Fire Safety: Putting Out a Campfire
Every Fatherhood Fires gathering ends the same way: with a fire that is fully, safely out. Whether you're meeting at a traditional campsite or a private rental space, please follow these steps every time.
Before You Light It
- Check for any local fire bans or restrictions before your gathering.
- Keep the fire in a designated fire ring or pit, well away from overhanging branches, dry grass, or leaves.
- Keep a bucket of water, a shovel, or a hose nearby the entire time the fire is burning.
Putting the Fire Out Completely
- Let the wood burn down to ash whenever possible, rather than dousing a large, active fire.
- Pour water slowly over all embers, not just the glowing ones. Give it a moment to soak in.
- Stir the ashes and embers with a shovel or stick, mixing in the water to reach anything still hot underneath.
- Add more water and stir again. Repeat until no hissing sound, steam, or smoke remains.
- Carefully feel above the ashes (never touch them directly) to check for remaining heat. If it feels warm, it isn't out yet.
Before You Leave
A cold fire is a safe fire. Never leave a gathering site until the fire is cool to the touch. If you can't confirm it's fully out, keep working it with water and stirring until you can.
